What changes when you turn 18?

18 is a big age. A big scary age. You stop being a kid. That's scary. For the first time in my whole life I'm not a kid anymore, and I'm not sure if I feel like it. I mean, I'm still the same person I was yesterday, am I not? I still feel little and vulnerable. 18 is way too young to be an adult. You're still a teenager for god's sake. There's just something so dreadful about your whole life changing in a day. Think about it, one second you're protected by society, and as soon as the clock hits midnight, you're left on your own. On my own.

Am I really on my own now? I don't feel mature enough to be on my own. I am, really, the same girl I was yesterday when I wasn't allowed to vote. What has changed in a single day that made everyone so sure I'm an adult now? Why is it that everyone has the same time to reach to maturity. I'm not mature. I just wanna keep going home after class, ask my dad for help when I need to sign up for anything and see the look of pity everyone gives me when I tell them I'm underage. Like it was okay for me not to know something if I was 17 but all that comprehension went away the second I turn 18. And what happens to hanging out? Am I supposed to keep asking my parents for permission or am I old enough to decide?

Why is that everything has to change in one single day?

Well I've been afraid of changing

Cuz I built my life around you

But time makes you bolder

Even children get older

And I'm getting older too.
